2009 to 2019… Where am I now?

All over social media at the moment, I am seeing people post a photo of themselves from 2009 and 2019 and comparing the difference. I thought I’d jump on the bandwagon and do the same, but mostly because when I think about how far I have come, I can’t quite believe it.

2009 Jess dreamed of living in Australia. 2019 Jess lives in Sydney. 2009 Jess wrote in secret, dreaming of one day writing full time. 2019 Jess has been writing for a living for the last few months. 2009 Jess was traumatised by her sexual assault. 2019 Jess has not only faced it, but has written about it so she can help others too. 2009 Jess dreamed of travel. 2019 Jess has ticked off all of the ‘big’ places on that travel wish list. 2009 Jess thought that after what had happened to her, she’d never fall in love. 2019 Jess is engaged to the man of her dreams (a man she coincidentally knew back then too!)

When it’s written down like that, it looks like a list of someone’s hopes and dreams, but they were my hopes and dreams and I went for them. It wasn’t easy to walk away from everyone and everything I knew and loved. It wasn’t easy to give up a full time job I enjoyed for the uncertainty of freelance work. It wasn’t easy to face up to the things that had haunted me for years… but I did it. I did it all.

I look at these photos side by side and see how little my face has changed (seriously, these chubby cheeks will make me forever baby faced!) but how much I have changed and grown as a person. 2009 Jess would be incredibly proud of 2019 Jess.

It’s not often we give ourselves credit for the things we do in life, but for once I’m going to. I am living my dream of moving to Australia and writing. I confronted my sexual assault. I let go of people who were pulling me down and embraced people who were good for me. I fell in love with the love of my life. I worked hard and I went for my goals. I’m so incredibly proud of myself. Saying I’m proud of who I have become is surely worth a post, right?

The last ten years have been great. They’ve had their ups and their downs, but overall this decade has been a bloody good one and I can’t wait to see what the next one brings!
